Converting Currency - when and where ...

A question many overseas travellers ask is whether it's better to exchange their currency once they are abroad or when they are at home. Well, currency rates change many times during a day, but only around plus or minus 1% at a time. So, unless you're changing thousands at a time it won't make too much difference. However, what you should look into is how much a bureau de change will charge you to exchange your money, and if they will charge you to exchange it back.

Exchanging Money At Home

When at home you can change your foreign currency at your local bank. Experts do suggest that you should only change enough to cover your travel and transportation costs and change the rest of your money once you are settled as rates and fees are usually better abroad.

Hotel or Airport Exchange Options

Hotel and airport exchanges are highly convenient but there is a cost for this convenience. Rates can be lower than average and charges can be high.

Exchanging Currency Via Your Credit Card

Credit cards can offer good exchange rates for exchanging money as credit card companies have access to much better rates than individuals do.

Do check though, when using your credit card, when your transaction will be charged to your account. If your home currency rate is falling and the transactions isn't added instantly there's a chance that you'll end up with a worse conversion rate a few days later.

A good currency option is taking Travellers Cheques with you. They are now less popular but they do offer some excellent benefits like they can be replaced easily if they're lost or stolen and can be used freely at exchanges to get the currency of the country you are in.

Overseas Banks

The exchange rates and charges given at local banks are normally good however, do bear in mind that one of two things might happen. If the currency exchange rate is determined by supply and demand then you might end up with a price that's close to the 'market price' so you might not have gained anything.

Or, another possibility is that the Country's Government set the currency exchange rate.

ATM - Cash Machines

If you'd prefer not carry large sums of money around then using ATM - cash machines - could be the option for you. Plus they offer good exchange rates and minimal charges.

One thing you do need to check is that you won't be charged by your UK bank for using this service, and the charge isn't every time you withdraw cash.

Also, warn your bank you are using your card overseas so they don't freeze your card when they see strange transactions (like withdrawals in several different countries over the course of a week).
