Travelling With Your Mobile Phone ...

If you are travelling with your mobile phone this year you need to make sure you have prepared properly. Read our easy to use guide that explains your options when taking your mobile phone on holiday to get the best deal and also it explains why International calls can cost so much.

Preparing To Use Your Mobile Phone Abroad ...

When taking your mobile phone on holiday call your Network provider and check/ask the following:

  • Is your mobile phone set up for 'International roaming'? You need to do this for your mobile phone abroad to work and it can take 14 days to activate.

  • Check you have the right handset to work in the Country you're travelling to - if the US for example you need a tri-band handset.

  • Check how much International calls will cost on your current contract.

  • Are there any deals that can be offered to you for the Country you are visiting?
Contact your Network provider on the numbers below:

Virgin 0845 6000 789
Vodafone 08700 700 191
Tesco Mobile 0845 301 44 55

The Right Tariff For Your Mobile Phone Abroad ...

It could be that you can change tariffs to get a deal for cheaper calls abroad for a monthly fee if you are a frequent flyer.

Or look into using an alternative International SIM card for the duration of your trip when taking your mobile phone on holiday. It's simple to use, it just replaces your usual SIM card.

These SIM cards can be purchased at most International airports or selected UK retailers, although its advised to get yours in advance of travel.

Buy one in advance from SIM for Travel, click this link:

And don't forget to take your electrical adapter for your mobile phone charger when overseas.

Using Your Mobile Phone Abroad ...

Once you've touched down and turned your mobile phone on it will locate a local phone transmitter which routes your calls whilst overseas.

However, your calls are still diverted through the UK, even though you've enabled International roaming. What happens is that your phone, say you're in France and you call your UK friend who's also in France. Your call goes via the UK and then back to France. That's 1,800 miles and this is why it costs so much to make a mobile phone call from abroad.

And be warned. Your friend you are calling is also paying to receive the call.

So do look into the right tariff or SIM card option that's right for you, or you might want to limit the amount you use your phone.

Contact Numbers...

When taking your mobile phone on holiday do be sure to add these numbers to your phone:

  • Telephone number of your Hotel / Tour Operator

  • Telephone number of the nearest British Embassy to where you are going to be staying

  • Your travel insurance provider's contact numbers

Important Numbers - Government Offices and Agencies
  Foreign & Commonwealth Office Enquiries +44 (0) 207 008 1500
  Services for Briton’s overseas +44 (0) 207 008 0210

Mobile Phone Security ...

Make sure you are prepared as you can be should you find your mobile phone on holiday is stolen or lost.

Write down your mobile's serial (IMEI) number, your own mobile number and the number of your Network provider's customer services department. Also, do you need to quote any passwords or pin numbers when speaking to your Network provider? Write these down too. Do not keep them in the same place as you'll be keeping your mobile.

Now you'll be able to contact your Network provider back in the UK to arrange for your phone and/or SIM card to be blocked.

When taking out your travel insurance remember few policies include cover for your mobile phone.
