Leeds Airport Health Risks When Flying ..

The majority of travellers going overseas by air don't suffer from any Leeds Airport health risks when flying. There are some in-flight health issues to be considered by these mostly occur in those passengers already suffering from ill-health.

Here we provide unofficial information on the possible Leeds Airport health risks when flying such as Deep Vein Thrombosis - DVT - cabin pressure sickness and motion sickness. We go through the symptoms and cures too.

Explained - Deep Vein Thrombosis - DVT ...

DVT Explained

Deep Vein Thrombosis - DVT - where the blood clots deep within one of the veins of the calf, thigh or pelvis. This is as a result of the blood flow becoming sluggish, normally because the blood has become dehydrated or from trauma such as abdominal surgery, heart disease or childbirth.

Another reason for DVT is because passengers don't get to move much, due to the cramped conditions. Mostly those passengers susceptible to DVT are those who are already ill or those who have recently had an operation. See below for at risk categories.

Those at risk from DVT

  • Passengers over 40
  • Family history DVT or past experience
  • Recent surgery - leg surgery or abdominal surgery, or an injury to the hips or knees
  • Pregnancy or recently having a baby
  • Cancer, and some cancer treatments
  • Circulation and heart problems
  • Obesity
Avoid DVT

  • Drink lots of water and avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks both before and during the flight
  • Wear big baggy clothing
  • Stretch out the muscles of your lower legs whilst sitting
  • Leave the underneath of the seat in front of you free so you can fully stretch out
  • Get up out of your seat and walk through the cabin every hour or so
  • Wear the 'flight socks' that are graduated compression stockings
DVT Symptoms Explained

Deep Vein Thrombosis can be uncomfortable but is treatable, and in most cases easily done so.

However, the alarming potential sequel to Deep Vein Thrombosis is when a piece of the blood actually forms a clot, called a pulmonary embolus, then breaks off and travels to the right side of the heart, then causing heart problems or even heart attack.

In most cases there aren't any symptoms of DVT, however if symptoms do occur then the following might be experienced:

  • The calf aching or sore
  • The calf or ankles swelling
  • Suffering from a slight fever and feeling generally unwell
  • The symptoms of DVT might not start for several days or weeks.
I think I have DVT - what do I do?

If you think you could have DVT then you need to speak to a doctor right away - treatment is quite simple in most cases.

If you are away and you fear DVT then go to the local hospital, speak to your holiday rep or call your airline for advice.

What Is Cabin Pressure? ...

Cabin pressure sickness happens because the cabins are pressurized differently when flying at altitude.

The low pressure means there's slightly less oxygen circulating in the air and it's much dryer.

Cabin pressure sickness can cause the following effects in passengers:

  • Ears hurting during take-off or landing - swallowing often by sucking sweets or chewing gum, even drinking through a straw
  • Avoid alcohol - it has 2 to 3 times the strength of a drink on the ground meaning you could feel sick quickly
  • Dehydration will also make you feel sick so drink lots of water before, during and after your flight

Avoiding Motion sickness...

Here we give some advice on avoiding motion sickness. Motion sickness is actually very common, especially when turbulence is bad.

Try these tips to avoid motion sickness.

  • Sit by a window
  • Or sit over the wings
  • Don't drink alcohol 24 hours before your flight
  • Keep your seat belt fastened all through the flight
  • Use natural remedies to avoid and cure motion sickness:
    • Alleviate dizziness - take Vitamin B6
    • Reduce stomach upsets by taking Magnesium
    • Drink peppermint tea to prevent vomiting
    • Ginkgo Bilboa can avoid chronic dizziness and light headedness
    • If you feel sick eat a ginger biscuit or take ginger extract
  • See a doctor if you are prone to very bad motion sickness

Flying On Medication ...

Always take the correct medication when flying. An emergency in the air is far more serious than one on the ground.

  • All medicines should be packed in your hand luggage with extras been packed to cover any delays
  • Any diabetes epilepsy sufferer needs to carry their notification card and ID card
  • Advise the airline of any medical issues you may have when booking your flight
  • Do you need vaccinations for where you are travelling to? Check with your doctor

Jet Lag ...

Jet lag symptoms do vary however, usually the symptoms are just tiredness and fatigue, and only tend to last a few days.

Jet lag is often worse the more time zones you've travelled through and in particular when travelling east.

  • Eat and sleep closer to those eating and sleeping times of where you are going to
  • Work in the time you are travelling to as soon as you set off by resetting your watch on take off
  • Avoid big meal and alcohol
  • Caffeine helps mask fatigue after a flight
  • The odd nap during the day will make you feel better but do limit them to just half an hour
  • Ginseng has been used for centuries to help fight fatigue
