Flying From Leeds Airport ...

It's vital you make sure you are as prepared as you can be - and we don't just mean you've packed your swimmers -but protected your home and your baggage meets the airline luggage allowances you can shake off any last minute worries.

General Hints & Tips ...

Did you know that almost half of all break-ins happen when a house or flat is left standing empty for long periods of time? So when you are away you need to make sure you have done everything you can to protect it.

Not only that, but you need to make sure you have cancelled any deliveries and appointments so that you avoid any cancellation fees. Also that you don't leave signs that you aren't home.

Use these general hints and tips as a starting point:
  • Do cancel your newspaper, milk or similar deliveries.

  • Don't order goods that will need to be signed for - like Recorded Delivery. Otherwise, with no signature the goods will be returned within one week by the Post Office.

  • Re-arrange any appointments that are in your diary so you don't miss them and then get charged.

  • Ask a member of your family, a good neighbour or a friend to move the post from your doorstep every day or two and also to water your plants.

  • Make sure any perishable items in your fridge have been thrown away or used up.

  • As a safety measure it's best to switch off all plug sockets throughout the house such as your PC and television.

  • Save money and energy by turning off your central heating and hot water during the Summer months when you're away. When travelling in the winter lower your central heating temperature and alter the time it's on. Don't turn it off completely though in case of a hard frost that could damage your pipes.

  • Arrange for your pets to be looked after, either by a house sitter or in a cattery or kennel. Either way leave out their favourite treats and toys and make sure whoever you leave them with knows all their routines and traits.

Security Tips For Your Home ...

When going on holiday we all need to make sure our homes and contents (that normally form our most valuable assets) are protected. Not just by checking your insurance is valid but by taking some simple steps to avoid burglars knowing you are away.

Use our simple guide of our top ten security tips:

  Top Ten Security Tips
  1. Automatic Lighting Fit some light timers in your main rooms that will confuse burglars by making the house look lived in.
  2. Post Your built up post on the doormat or hanging from the letter box needs picking up. Get a friend, family member or neighbour to do this for you whilst you're away.

Failing that, get Royal Mail's Keepsafe service activated that will hold your mail for up to two months.

3. Deliveries Don't forget to cancel deliveries like milk or newspaper that give away you aren't home if built up on the doorstep.
4. Baggage Tags: If you fill in your baggage label with your home address you risk your home be targeted as anyone handling your baggage know not only where you live but when you'll be home. Only fill it in on your way home, not your way out.
5. House Checking: Anyone monitoring your home will be confused if you've arranged for people to pop by now and then. Get them to park on the drive, pull curtains, and whilst they are there get them to water your garden and home pot plants too!

To air on the side of caution, make sure you've left your contact details with the same person who is house checking should they need to contact you in an emergency.
6. Neighbourhood Watch: Consider joining your local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. Visit their website at www.neighbourhoodwatch.net to see if there's one in your area.
7. Valuable Items: If you have valuables and important documents then consider leaving them with either people you can trust, or arrange for your Bank to store them in their safe.

You don't want to tempt passers by with your valuable TV, PCs on display from the window. If you can move them, or put up temporary net curtains to at least distort the view.

Do check you have suitable home and contents insurance before you go.
8. Alarm:  Should you have a burglar alarm use a trusted friend or neighbour to be an additional key holder and inform your Security Company should they need to contact anyone in an emergency.
9. Outdoor Storage: Your bikes, power tools and such like (and are of high value) normally stored in a shed or garage could be moved indoors whilst you are away.
10. Locks: Last but not least, before you leave check all your doors and windows are shut and locked up tight.

For additional home security tips it's worth seeing if your local police force will come out and review your home's security measures. Often they will offer advice and improvement security tips too.

Luggage Allowances & Packing Tips ...

Do remember, before you pack everything but the kitchen sink, that your suitcase has to weigh the same or less than the airline's luggage allowance.

For your convenience we've listed some packing tips, including the normal luggage allowances for your baggage.

Whilst the luggage allowances for your baggage can vary from Airline to Airline, the weight is normally 70lbs/32kgs. Although do check if your airline has printed its luggage allowance on your flight ticket as many do.

If your baggage weighs more than the allocated luggage allowance you will be charged to carry the extra weight. This will be a big fine and what's more you have to repack your baggage into smaller bags so that the weight is evenly distributed (and you have to go and buy the smaller bags).

If you have to travel with extra baggage do contact the airline in advance. Also contact the airline if you are carrying large or outsized baggage.

All airlines will ask travellers a number of security questions at check-in about their luggage when travelling from Leeds Airport. This is to double check no restricted or prohibited items are being carried and for security you packed your own bags and have not agreed to carry anything for a stranger.

You can find details on security, plus restricted items by visiting the Security section of this website
