Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBA) began life as Yeadon Aerodrome in 1931.
By 1935, the airport had expanded considerably with new scheduled air services commencing.
One year later in 1936, plans were unveiled for a £40,000 terminal building. One wing was built, however, demolished in 1977 to make way for the new improved facilities that make up the present terminal.
With the outbreak of war, all flying ceased from the airfield in 1939. More than 4,500 aircraft were built during the war years at the Avro Factory situated adjacent to the airport.
In 1947, post war flights began and in 1953, Yeadon Aviation Ltd was formed to run the airport and Yeadon Aero Club.
The Joint Committee took over Leeds Bradford International Airport in 1959, and work soon began to improve the airport facilities.
A fire destroyed a good part of the terminal building in 1965 and work began on a new passenger terminal that later opened in 1968.
In 1978, a Government White Paper on Airport Policy identified that Yorkshire could sustain a Category B regional airport.
A £23 million scheme began construction in 1982. The first phase of the terminal extension was opened by HRH The Duchess of Kent in 1983.
The Airport experienced extensive growth and by 1986, ½ million passengers had used the terminal.
In 1987, Leeds Bradford International Airport was converted into a Limited Company, and in 1996, just over 2.6 million passengers travelled through the airport.
Extensive development has continued into the 21st Century and the airport is likely to pass the 3 million passenger mark in the next two years. In addition, the LBA Directors anticipate in excess of 4 million passengers passing through the airport by 2015. |
